Vatter-Hemsch 1751, Paris

Vatter-Hemsch auf Bühne

My Vatter-Hemsch harpsichord came about through the many years I spent intensively studying the original Henri Hemsch from 1751, combined with the idea of what Henri Hemsch might invent today if he were living in the 21st century.

My invention offers the possibility of combining two slightly different sound characters within this harpsichord. In realising this project, I designed a construction that works with a second, optionally removable soundboard that can be placed inside the harpsichord.

With this second soundboard, the sound becomes even more articulate and distinctive — bringing this harpsichord, unusual for a French instrument, even greater polyphonic qualities.

With the second soundboard, the harpsichord also gains greater projection, whether as a continuo instrument or as a solo instrument in an ensemble.

When I remove this second soundboard, Henri Hemsch speaks — with all his own extraordinary qualities, audible in Rameau as well as in the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue by Bach.

Draufsicht

On 19 March 2017, Justin Taylor performed the presentation of my Vatter-Hemsch harpsichord at the Sendesaal in Bremen, during which live recordings were made of pieces by Bach, Rameau, and Sweelinck, among others.

It has two 8ʹ and one 4ʹ register, two manuals with French slider coupler, a lute stop in the upper manual, a range from Fʹ to Fʹʹʹ, and a transposing device for 392 Hz / 415 Hz / 440 Hz.

I played the Vatter-Hemsch harpsichord of Christian Kuhlmann a few weeks after it was finished. The sound was already the one of an ancient harpsichord! In addition, this instrument is really easy to play on. You have almost the feeling it can play by itself! The refined harmonisation allows a lot of subtle dynamics with an appropriate toucher. As I said, the sound is quite fascinating. The whole instrument «sings», and the deepness of the lower notes is enlightened by the shine of the upper notes. The musician’s choice!
